Well-known PC hardware site ExtremeTech has released review of three new Hercules sound cards. In the review they used RMAA program for their measurement. Look what these guys said:

We wanted to try out the RightMark Audio Analyzer (RMAA) benchmark because of the speed with which it can gather its test results. It looks at the same types of signal quality measurements we normally make with the Audio Precision System One, and produces repeatable results. Other sites have been using it for some time, particularly in Europe, so we decided to take it for a test spin.

Well known PC hardware web-site AnandTech has released its VIA KT333 Motherboard Roundup. In this review there is a part where on-board audio was tested with RMAA test suite.

When we first introduced this section into our motherboard roundups we focused almost exclusively on performance. We did some rudimentary verifications of audio output quality but there was nothing serious at all. Armed with RightMark's Audio Analyzer we were able to perform some more objective tests on the audio output quality of these on-board audio codecs.

We'd like to make an important notice from Creative for those who are testing Creative Audigy soundcard. When the card operates at the loopback mode some distortions occur to the sound that make the testing results wrong. It is happened because of the card is set up so that out of the box it is optimised for games. So, to obtain the correct test results (and only in a test mode when signal is passing from line-out to line-in) you need set the card up to the special test mode.

FR test of Audigy card;
default settings cause
wrong test result
FR test of Audigy card;
settings according to Creative's guide let us obtain right test result

Creative have released a special step-by-step guide for preparing the Audigy for RMAA testing. Here is this document in PDF format. Zipped version is available at the download section.

Please notice that the test results, published at iXBT.com, Digit-Life and audio.rightmark.org do not experience these problems, because we have not tested Audigy in the loopback mode. We have performed separate measurements of line-out and line-in using a reference sound card.

This setup is NOT needed if you are just taking a digital audio sample via the line-in and then analysing it via the line-out. You also are not needed in any special settings if you use the card just for listening music or for playing games.

3 March 2002

A new version of RightMark Audio Analyzer - RMAA 3.3 has been released. Major changes include:

  • new levels setup interface featuring realtime THD monitor,
  • option for saving graphs in PNG format from the spectrum graph window,
  • standardized dithering algorithm (standard TPDF dither),
  • better Win2K, WDM compatibility,
  • increased stability (several minor bugs fixed).

Get it at the download section!

New version of RightMark Audio Analyzer - RMAA 3.2 is available now. Windows 2000 and Windows XP are supported correctly now! Some minor bugs were fixed. Antialiasing for spectrograms was added (only for HTML reports). Get it at the download section.

New edition of RightMark Audio Analyzer is available now. It's named RMAA Acoustics Testing Edition or in abbreviated form RMAA-AE. It is a program for acoustic systems testing. RMAA-AE based on the same RMAA core, v.3.2. There are two kind of special testing signal in the program now: music noise and swept sine. For acoustic systems testing it is advisable to use a card with exellent AFC and a special measurement microphone (for example, BEHRINGER ECM8000).

09 November 2001

New test results of the professional sound card EGO·SYS Waveterminal were added. After replacement the connection cables from long 2 meters ordinary audio/video to short 15 cm studio microphone cable a 50 Hz with harmonics noise pickup in test results had disappeared.

05 November 2001

After long months in hard work of all the members of RMAA project, we present an official release of RightMark Audio Analyzer and start this official user support site.

In Download section section you can find RMAA v.3.0 test suite and its documentation available for free download. Many measurement procedures were completely rewritten and may produce output results different from results of previous non-official versions (such as SCAN 1.X, RMAA 2.0-2.5 betas). We do not recommend using previous versions of the test suite, which can be found at some freeware sites.

What's new in RMAA 3.0

  1. Added IMD (intermodulation distortion) test with adjustable parameters of test signals.
  2. Now you can compare 2 spectrums from different sound cards at one spectrum window.
  3. Added 24 bit 96 kHz support for testing new sound cards with professional sampling formats.
  4. Updated User's Manual

What will be implemented in nearest versions?

  1. Phase Error test will be added.
  2. RMAA interface will be improved: you will be able to compare many sound cards at the single window and easily maintain multiple tests' results.
